The Council of Europe, founded in 1949, promotes respect for human rights, pluralistic democracy and the rule of law. Its focus is to ensure that national legislations comply with the norms and standards adopted by the Council.
The role of the Council of Europe in providing a forum for its members’ cooperation in legal, political, social and cultural spheres is significant. The wide cooperation established between the main organs of the Council, the Committee of Ministers, the Parliamentary Assembly and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, has led to important advances that benefit the everyday life of all Europeans.
To promote the aims of the organisation the Council also collaborates with the European Union, inter-governmental organisations such as the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe and the United Nations, as well as with non-governmental organisations.
